Obstetric complications in schizophrenia

(BDQ). They were also interviewed using a semi-structured schedule focussed on the phenomenon of bodily change. Each subject was also asked to attempt an estimation of the size of body parts on a linear presentation. All groups over-estimated their body size, with females significantly more so than males. Apart from a non-significant trend for female schizophrenics to over-estimate to a greater extent, there was no difference between any of the groups, including controls. On the BSQ and BDQ, there was no difference between the schizophrenic group and controls, even though the semi-structured interviews in the patient group indicate quite marked distortions of body experience, suggesting that the standard instruments are not sensitive enough in rating the subjective experience in schizophrenic patients. There was no correlation between the BPRS, SANS, and HBS ratings in the patient group and the ratings on BSQ and BDQ. These findings will be discussed in relation to theoretical issues in the study of subjective experiences in schizophrenia, and the methodology appropriate to this domain of disability.

Risk of schizophrenia in adults born after obstetric complications and their association with early onset of illness: a controlled study.
OBJECTIVE To determine whether obstetric complications occur to excess in the early histories of individuals who go on to develop schizophrenia when compared with controls, and to seek clinical correlates of any such excess. DESIGN Contemporaneous maternity hospital records were identified and extracted verbatim, and these extracts evaluated for obstetric complications by two independent asse...
متن کاملObstetric complications as risk factors for schizophrenia spectrum psychoses in offspring of mothers with psychotic disorder.
BACKGROUND Obstetric complications have predicted future development of schizophrenia in previous studies, but they are also more common in mothers with schizophrenia. The aims of this study were to compare the occurrence of obstetric complications in children of mothers with schizophrenia spectrum psychoses and control children, and to investigate whether obstetric complications predicted chil...
متن کاملThe role of obstetric events in schizophrenia.
It is now well established that obstetric complications or obstetric events increase the risk for schizophrenia. This is a small effect—the pooled odds ratio of the effect of exposure to obstetric complications on the subsequent development of schizophrenia has been estimated to be about 2.0 (95% confidence interval, 1.6–2.4). The term ‘‘obstetric complications’’ covers a wide range of events, ...
متن کاملResponse to "The prevention of schizophrenia: what interventions are safe and effective?".
Obstetric complications appear to increase the risk of developing schizophrenia, and post-World War II improvements in obstetric care may have contributed to a decline in the incidence of the illness in the developed world. Educating providers and consumers of psychiatric and obstetric services about the risk of obstetric complications in increasing the risk of schizophrenia could bring about a...
متن کاملAssociation between psychotic disorder and urban place of birth is not mediated by obstetric complications or childhood socio-economic position: a cohort study.
BACKGROUND Although urban place of birth has been identified as a risk factor for schizophrenia, the extent to which this association is mediated by socially patterned risk factors such as obstetric complications and childhood socio-economic position is unclear. The diagnostic specificity of the association within the clinical psychotic syndromes is also unclear. METHOD A population cohort of...
